Aarti in Hardwar is a beautiful ceremony that occurs every
morning end evening at many places along the banks of the
river Ganga. This painting by Pieter Weltevrede is based
on a real scene at the Harkipuri Ghat in Hardwar. Dozens
of priests make intricate movements with flames while a
somewhat chaotic concert of bells and gongs produces a unique
athmosphere. At the same time, devotees pray, take a ritual
bath in Ganga and let small leaf-boats with candles and
flowers take to the current.
